Gordon Lightfoot
Not too long ago I had a dream involving one of my
favorite musicians, singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.
Known for his songs such as "Sundown", The
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," and "If you
Could Read My Mind," this Canadian folk music icon
has garnered 15 Juno Awards and 5 Grammy nominations.
The artistic Libra rises in his chart, and although
combust, Venus, it's ruler, is also helped by its conjunction
with the royal functional benefic, Sun. As ruler of
the 11th house house, the Sun assures that income will
be made from Venusian pursuits. This is confirmed by
their placement in the 2nd house of wealth and status.
Jupiter continues the theme of fame and fortune as
it is conjunct the 4th house of assets, the 8th house
of other people's money, the 10th house of profession,
and the 12th house of travel. These areas of Gordon's
life are affected by Jupiter's rulership of the 3rd
house ruling communication, writing, and initiatives.
His songwriting his known throughout the world.
Rahu and Ketu's placement on the most effective points
of the odd-numbered houses has given mixed blessings
in Gordon's life. Rahu's effect is to fuel ambitions
and bring recognition and fame while at the same time
contributing to Gordon's well-known alcoholism (I've
lost count of how many times the words "whiskey"
and "wine" have appeared in his songs). Ketu's
placement in the 7th house of partnerships resulted
in a divorce during the subperiod of the Moon which
is badly placed in the 12th house of losses.
Gordon's health has been problematic over the years.
He contracted Bell's Palsy, a disease which paralyzes
one side of the face. We look to Mars, ruling the muscles,
for this and find that it is debilitated in Navamsha
and badly placed in the 12th house. The affliction to
the 1st house by Rahu and the 1st house ruler's combustness
also play a role. In September, 2002, before a concert,
Gordon was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening
abdominal bleeding. At the time, most malefic planet,
Mercury, ruling the 12th house of hospitalization, had
slowed in its transit over weak Mars (blood) and opposition
to weak Saturn, ruler of the stomach in the 6th house
of health.
The 6th house also rules litigation and in April, 1987,
with Mercury and Rahu transiting through that house,
Gordon filed a lawsuit against Michael Masser claiming
that Masser stole 24 bars of his song "If You Could
Read My Mind." The case was settled out of court
with a public apology from Masser (Jupiter was also
transiting the 6th house). Note that Saturn's particular
significations of intellectual property and creativity
from its 5th house rulership is in jeopardy in the 6th
house of lawsuits and conflicts.
Today, Gordon still tours and I eagerly look forward
to seeing him in concert for the third time (not counting
my dream) in August of this year.
