A
brunch break here before visiting the Taj Mahal
in Agra |
I am arranging to get some laundry done. We left for
Agra at 7am. It's a 4 hour journey but fortunately we
stopped for a breakfast break and had a very comfortable
van to ride. All the ameneties were extended in the
van such as juice, fruit, and water.
Before entering the compounds, we were required to
leave behind cell phones and computers. What a travesty
it would be to have this beautiful monument destroyed.
But, what can I say about the Taj Mahal? "Oh my God"
were the first words out of my mouth. What a stunning
piece of architectural wonder. It was commissioned to
be built by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in
1631 in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It
took 22 years, 20,00 workers, and 32 million rupees
to build. The emperor was entombed there upon his death.

After removing our shoes in a side room of the Taj,
we walked through the main doors. We weren't allowed
to go below to see the real tombs of the king and his
wife, but workers had meticulously reconstructed them
on the main floor for all to see. There's nothing more
than just space inside. Interestingly, one can call
out inside and hear your voice travel 360 degrees around
the interior.
Can
you believe it! I'm at the Taj Mahal! |
Outside, the artwork on the building is exquisite.
The entire structure and the stairs are made of solid
piece marble. Obviously, viewing this wonder of the
world left an indeliable impression on me.

The pillars on one side are 3
sided but looking up, give the optical illusion
of seeing 8 sides.

Afterwards, it was a short ride to the sumptuous Sheraton
hotel where we were treated to a marvelous buffet lunch
including pistachio ice cream. Here, you will see pictures
of me next to an Astrologer's sign. Yes, they had a
real astrologer's office there for consultation but
s/he wasn't in when we were there.

The drive back seemed much longer than in the morning.
We had a tea stop an 1.5 hour from Gurgaon then arrived
back at the Club at 9:30pm.
